The “Bill and Ted” franchise has never had groundbreaking movies, but “Bill and Ted Face the Music” continues on in the series of entertaining movies.
While it doesn’t seem like the franchise does more than pass on the torch to a new generation, it’s one of the most fun movies to watch to date.
The stakes are higher than ever for the time-traveling exploits of William "Bill" S. Preston Esq. (Alex Winter) and Theodore "Ted" Logan (Keanu Reeves). The now middle aged best friends set out on a new adventure to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe, with the helped by their daughters (Samara Weaving and Brigette Lundy-Paine), a new batch of historical figures and a few music legends. The film also stars Kristen Schaal, Erinn Hayes, Jayma Mays, Holland Taylor, Kid Cudi, Anthony Carrigan, Jillian Bell, Beck Bennett, William Sadler, Hal Landon Jr. and Amy Stoch.
Winters seems to continue playing the role of the carefree Bill. Although he may have aged a bit, the same charisma of the character shines through.
Reeves, much like Winters, continues to give the character of Ted a fantastic fun carefree personal which is wonderful. The growth of his character comes through and is fun to watch from beginning to end.
It’s not surprising that these two goofball characters are hilarious and continue to entertain.
The story has two generations racing to find a way to save time and space.
Weaving, who plays Bill’s daughter Theodore or Thea, is funny and there’s really not much complexity to her character, but there’s still growth, no matter how minor that growth may be. She is a nice addition to the franchise.
Lundy-Paine, who plays Ted’s daughter Wilhelmina or Billie, is wonderful as well. She plays her character very fun and it makes the sentimental moments that much more special.
There’s nothing monumental about the movie other than it brings Bill and Ted’s adventures to a new generation and there’s really no movie that is as fun to watch as this one is.
It may not be a critically acclaimed movie, but there’s hardly any movie that takes on three storylines going through their own paths and makes sure that all six main characters grown while making sure to develop the one major story ark of saving time and space.
The late George Carlin, makes a cameo as his iconic time-traveling character Rufus, and Kristen Schaal steps in as his Rufus’ daughter Kelly, the new time traveling guide for not only Bill and Ted, but their daughters Thea and Billie.
Schaal is as funny as ever as she wonderfully pays homage to Carlin. There’s no replacing the charismatic wonder that was Carlin, but Schaal is able to make a fantastic time-traveler.
Most surprising, Kid Cudi plays a version of himself, and for the most part steals the show whenever he is on screen. As the voice of the science of the movie, he just blows it away. Just a wonderful addition to the movie.
“Bill and Ted Face the Music” May not be considered a revolutionary film, the franchise has really been nothing more than fun, entertaining, and comical movies that are fun for the whole family.
At its core, the movie is about two families learning that the best place to be is with their family, who no matter how dysfunctional they may seem, come together to support and help make each other the happiest possible.
